Free Country Performs Pop, Country, and Rock Tunes on the National Mall

This week the Marine Band’s popular music ensemble, Free Country, will perform a mix of old and new songs by various artists from different genres at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 10, on the west terrace of the U.S. Capitol and Thursday, Aug. 11, at the Sylvan Theater on the grounds of the Washington Monument. All performances are free and no tickets are required. Patrons are encouraged to bring folding chairs or blankets to sit on as there is no permanent seating available

Summer Concerts of the Mall Inspired by Europe and Outer Space

This week the Marine Band will perform a mix of music with Danish, French, and Spanish influences, as well as popular works including Selections from Wicked by Stephen Schwartz and the Main Title from Star Wars by John Williams. Conducted by Assistant Director Maj. Michelle A. Rakers, the outdoor performances will take place at 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 6, on the west terrace of the U.S. Capitol and at 8 p.m., Thursday, July 7, at the Sylvan Theater on the grounds of the Washington Monument. Both concerts are free and no tickets are required.

Summer Fare with Olympic Fanfare and William Tell

This week the Marine Band will evoke the Olympic spirit by performing John Williams’ Olympic Fanfare and Theme. Williams wrote the composition for the 1984 Olympics, which were held in Los Angeles at the Memorial Coliseum, and also conducted the première performance for the ceremonies held on opening day of the Summer Games that same year. In addition to the Williams fanfare, the Marine Band will perform a variety of music including marches by John Philip Sousa and Henry Fillmore and Gioachino Rossini’s Overture to William Tell.

2016 National Tour to the Southeast

“The President’s Own” United States Marine Band’s national concert tour this October marks a special milestone: the 125th anniversary of the organization’s first tour. After crisscrossing the country thousands of times and logging many miles via planes, trains, automobiles, ferries, and bicycles, the band’s tradition of bringing the music of the White House to the American public continues well into its third century with concerts this year in southern Maryland, eastern Virginia, eastern North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, southern Alabama, and Florida.

Summer Fare Revs up for Olympics

This week the Marine Band will set the stage for Rio 2016 by performing The Olympic Spirit by John Williams as part of the Summer Fare performances on the National Mall. Williams wrote the fanfare style theme for the 1988 Summer Olympics in South Korea and it can be heard every four years as broadcasters cover the games. In addition to the Williams anthem, the band will perform a variety of music including works by American composers John Philip Sousa and Leonard Bernstein.
