Orchestra Performs the Music of Bach and Schubert’s Death and the Maiden

The Marine Chamber Orchestra will continue its Summer Orchestra Series at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 16, at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria. Conducted by Assistant Director Capt. Ryan J. Nowlin, concert highlights include an oboe solo and Gustav Mahler’s arrangement for string orchestra of Franz Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14, in D minor, D. 810, Death and the Maiden. The concert is free and tickets are not required. Free parking is available in the garage adjacent to the hall.

Yankee Doodle Comes to Wheaton

During the summer months, musicians from “The President’s Own” are in high demand in concert twice a week on the National Mall, weekly Evening Parades at Marine Barracks Washington, frequent funerals at Arlington National Cemetery, and at countless other ceremonies and events in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. However, a few musicians are able to break away for a short time to bring a small sampling of the Marine Band to far-flung areas of the country where the concert band tradition remains strong. These appearances take place while Marine Band musicians are in a Permissive Temporary Additional Duty status, meaning they are at no cost to the government.

The Marine Band Library’s mission is to support the full range of musical commitments tasked by the White House; the Director of Public Affairs, Headquarters Marine Corps; and the Director of “The President’s Own.” The library is one of the nation’s oldest and largest performing music libraries, with holdings exceeding 100,000 music titles for band, orchestra, chamber ensembles, dance band, and piano. But what many don’t know is that the Marine Band Library also houses hundreds of historical artifacts and archival items, including some personal items of John Philip Sousa and treasured Sousa encore books.

Marine Jazz Ensemble at the Museum of American History

On Thursday, June 30, the Marine Jazz Ensemble will perform three concerts at 12 p.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. in the National Museum of American History’s Flag Hall. The jazz concerts, part of the Smithsonian museum’s Star-Spangled American Music Series, will feature a diverse mix of music that explores the series theme of “America Participates.” All three performances are free and open to the public; no tickets are required.

Summer Camps Provide More Opportunities for Educational Outreach

School may be out, but that doesn’t mean Marine Band musicians have hung up their lesson plans for the summer. Several members are taking part in music camps and providing instruction and mentorship to the next generation of musicians. These appearances take place while Marine Band musicians are in a Permissive Temporary Additional Duty status, meaning they are at no cost to the government. Principal percussion Master Gunnery Sgt. Mark Latimer is headed to Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington for the Summer Percussion Academy & Workshop run by percussion professor and department chair John Tafoya, also former principal timpani with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C.

Free Country on the Mall and at the Harbor

This week the Marine Band’s popular music ensemble, Free Country, will perform at 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 22, on the west terrace of the U.S. Capitol and 8 p.m., Thursday, June 23, at the Sylvan Theater on the grounds of the Washington Monument. The ensemble will also perform at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, June 25, on the plaza stage at National Harbor, as part of National Harbor’s Military Summer Concert Series.

Summer Fare Gets Jazzed This Week

This week’s summer fare performances will feature evenings of jazz music, as the Marine Jazz Ensemble performs at 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 15 on the west terrace of the U.S. Capitol and at 8 p.m., Thursday, June 16 at the Sylvan Theater, on the grounds of the Washington Monument. Coordinated by trumpeter Master Sgt. Daniel Orban and double bassist Gunnery Sgt. Eric Sabo, the ensemble will perform a collection of jazz standards and favorites, from the slow, sultry sounds of Tommy Wolf’s “Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most” to the toe-tapping groove of Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Paparelli’s “Blue ‘N’ Boogie.”

June 8 and 9 Summer Fare Performances Feature the Great American Songbook

This week’s Summer Fare performances at 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 8 and 8 p.m., Thursday, June 9 will bring musical duos to the fore and will be conducted by one of the Marine Band’s own, guitar player Master Sgt. Alan Prather. Prather’s performance is the culmination of the band’s Conductor Training Program, which gives musicians the opportunity to study conducting, receive coaching from current and former Marine Band Directors and leaders in the field, and ultimately lead the band in concert.
