James L. Culleton
Drum Major, December 1909-June 28, 1911
Chicago native James L. Culleton enlisted as an apprentice musician in January 1892. Following training as an apprentice musician at Marine Barracks Washington, he served as a drummer in Portsmouth, N.H., and Boston. He was named the 22nd Drum Major of the Marine Band in December 1909 and served until the end of his enlistment on June 28, 1911. He reenlisted in the Fleet Marine Force, serving the Marine Corps for nearly 30 years upon his retirement in 1919
