"The President's Own"

Edward D. Hughes

Edward D. Hughes was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1843. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 2, 1854, at age eleven. He was trained as a musician and spent the next twenty-eight years in the Army, first as a musician and later as a Drum Major. On June 12, 1882, he was appointed the seventeenth Drum Major of the Marine Band. He retired on Oct. 31, 1885.
