Funeral for Maj. Norman T. Hatch
On Aug. 17, 2017 ceremonial marchers from Marine Barracks Washington, led by Escort Commander Lt. Col. John Barclay, and the Marine Band, led by Drum Major Master Sgt. Duane King, took part in the funeral of Maj. Norman T. Hatch, USMC (ret.). Maj. Hatch captured film footage during the Battle of Tarawa in World War II which the Warner Brothers Studio used to create the short film "With the Marines at Tarawa." The film won the 1945 Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject). In addition, Maj. Hatch was on Iwo Jima when two of his cameramen filmed the infamous raising of a second, larger flag over the island which was immortalized in a photograph by photo journalist Joe Rosenthal.
