This program explores the connection between the human voice and instruments, with some works featuring the voice itself intermingled with the many instrumental sounds of the wind ensemble. Selections include Gustav Holst’s classic Second Suite in F for Military Band and Edward Elgar’s arrangement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Fantasia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 537, transcribed for band by Captain Ryan J. Nowlin. Also included is Joseph Schwantner’s and the mountains rising nowhere; William Bolcom’s Three Cabaret Songs, featuring mezzo-soprano Gunnery Sgt. Sara Sheffield; and James Stephenson’s Symphony No. 2, Voices, which was composed specifically for “The President’s Own.” The concert will take place at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 7, at Northern Virginia Community College's Schlesinger Concert Hall in Alexandria, Va.
