Concerts April 12 & 13
Oliver Knussen at the LOC: From April 8-12, British composer and conductor Oliver Knussen will curate a series of concerts and special programs at the Library of Congress, a residency that will culminate in a performance by “The President’s Own.” A staunch advocate of new music, Knussen has programmed intriguing contemporary works by Peter Lieberson, Elliott Carter, and Gunther Schuller. Balancing these more recent works are selections by Igor Stravinsky and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Chamber Music Series: Coordinated by trombonist Master Sgt. Chris Clark, the concert will include various ensembles featuring the musicians of “The President’s Own,” from brass quintet to trombone sextet and clarinet quartet. The program will feature the music of Bach, Poulenc, Mandernach, Tomasi, and Beethoven. Both concerts are free and no tickets are required. The Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress is located at 101 Independence Ave., SE, Washington, DC; Sousa Band Hall is located at Marine Barracks Annex, 7th & K Streets, SE, Washington, DC. Free parking across from the annex under the overpass.
