Marine Band Concerto Competition Final Round - Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. - High school students from around the nation were selected for the final round of the Marine Band Concerto Competition, which will be presented as a recital open to the public. The winner will be invited to perform his or her solo in concert with the Marine Band on April 5 and will receive a $2,500 scholarship from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. The runner up will receive a $500 scholarship. The concert is free and will take place at John Philip Sousa Band Hall at the Marine Barracks Annex, located at 7th & K Streets, SE, Washington, DC. Free parking is available under the overpass on 7th Street.
Marine Band Concert: Feb. 23, 2020 - Sunday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. - Commemorate the 75th anniversary of the flag raising at Iwo Jima with an inspiring concert at the National Museum of the Marine Corps that memorializes famous campaigns of the Marine Corps, from World War II to the present day.
Strathmore Gala Concert: Feb. 17 - Monday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. - Grammy Award-winning conductor JoAnn Falletta will conduct the Marine Band and Marine Chamber Orchestra in a concert featuring American works, including a guest solo by world-class saxophonist Timothy McAllister. The concert is free, but tickets are required and are available at www.strathmore.org.
Jim Lehrer Memorial Service - On Friday, Jan. 31, 2020, members of "The President's Own" supported the memorial service of former Marine Jim Lehrer. Lehrer, co-founder and longtime anchor of the PBS NewsHour, was a friend of the band. He died on Jan. 23 at the age of 85. A string quartet and vocalist performed and trumpeter sounded "Taps." Chamber Music Series: Feb. 9 - Sunday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. - This concert focuses on pieces with unique instrumentation, including a French horn quartet, reed quintet, woodwind quintet with euphonium, cello/double bass duo, and a piece dedicated to percussion and piano.
