Lt. Col. John R. Barclay Retirement Ceremony - On June 25, 2018, Executive Assistant to the Director Lt. Col. John R. Barclay retired from the Marine Band after 30 years of service. Lt. Col. Barclay joined the Marine Band in 1988 as a clarinetist and was appointed E-flat clarinetist in 1990. In 1996, he was named Operations Assistant and Assistant Drum Major, and in 1999 he became the Administrative Assistant to the Director. Later that year, he was named the band’s 37th Drum Major. Lt. Col. Barclay served in this capacity until 2001, when he was appointed to Executive Assistant to the Director. In this capacity, he served as the chief advisor to the Director for non-musical matters and was as the officer-in-charge of the band's Support Staff. In addition to his regular duties, Lt. Col. Barclay also served as a Ceremonial Marcher at Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., and has marched as Parade Commander for the 2008-10, 2012, and 2016 Parade Seasons. Since 2008, he has also served as an Escort Commander for Full Honors Funerals at Arlington National Cemetery and as Chief Instructor of Ceremonial Drill for all Marine Barracks officers and staff non-commissioned officers. Marine Chamber Orchestra Concert June 23 - Saturday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. - Making his conducting debut with the Marine Chamber Orchestra, Assistant Director Capt. Bryan P. Sherlock will kick off the orchestra’s Summer Series with works by well-known composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Igor Stravinsky, and Gustav Holst, as well as some lesser-known gems by Karl Jenkins and Henryk Górecki. The program will feature Stravinsky’s Concerto in D for String Orchestra; Holst’s St. Paul’s Suite, Opus 29, No. 2; and Bach’s popular Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F, BWV 1047, featuring flutist Gunnery Sgt. Ellen Dooley, oboist Staff Sgt. Trevor Mowry, trumpeter Staff Sgt. Anthony Bellino, and violinist Staff Sgt. Sheng-Tsung Wang. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will take place in Northern Virginia Community College's Schlesinger Concert Hall in Alexandria, Va. There will be no pre-concert ensemble performance prior to this concert.
