During the month of March, “The President’s Own” will again host “Sousa’s March Mania,” a free tournament pitting 32 marches against each other for the Marine Band online community to determine which one is the favorite. Every day from March 7 – April 6, marches will compete head to head while fans vote which ones advance in the tournament. A great resource for school curriculum, participants can listen to and study the marches, as well as vote for their favorites. If you get a perfect bracket, please notify Marine Band Public Affairs on April 7 through social media or by email at marineband.publicaffairs@usmc.mil to be crowned an honorary “March King.” The competition begins March 7, so download your bracket now from the Marine Band website!

Fidelis Four Set: Sousa’s March Mania

5 Apr 2016 | Staff Sgt. Rachel Ghadiali United States Marine Band

Over the past week, “Sousa’s March Mania” participants have voted for Sousa marches, taken down a past Mania champ, and pushed through the 2015 Mania winner.

Advancing from “Sousa’s Sixteen,” 2014 March Mania champ Entry March of the Boyares dominated Globe and Eagle with a 450 to 222 win and “The Circus Bee” buzzed past “The Thunderer” 325 to 313. With the “Enlisted Eight” solidified, the fierce competition continued.

“Entry of the Gladiators” battled hard against Valdres, but ultimately lost 311 to 372, and “Semper Fidelis” secured a lopsided win over the Billboard March (356 to 149) to enter the competition’s “Fidelis Four.” On April 2, old March Mania rivals met again: in 2014 Boyares snatched the title from favored Stars and Stripes Forever. But after spending most of the day trailing, Stars rallied overnight to defeat Boyares, 597 to 452. “The Washington Post” secured the final spot in the “Fidelis Four” by defeating “The Circus Bee” 290 to 222.

To close the competition, three marches by John Philip Sousa, “The March King,” have headed into the competition’s “Fidelis Four.” The Mania final match will take place on April 6 with the winning march announced on April 7. At the end of the tournament, anyone with a perfect bracket will be a winner of “Sousa’s March Mania” and will be named a “March King” for a day!
