July 9, 2014 -- Summer Fare concerts continue this week with lively music by the Marine Jazz Combo with performances at 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 9, and Thursday, July 10, on the west steps of the U.S. Capitol. The evening performances are free and no tickets are required.
The concerts will feature a mixed bag of jazz from standards to smooth jazz to fusion and will allow all members of the combo to be featured. Led by guitarist Gunnery Sgt. Alan Prather, the group will perform songs by Pat Metheny, Larry Carlton, Mike Stern, Miles Davis, Edgar Sampson, Joe Sample, Bill Withers, Robert Mellin, and Guy Wood.
“These performances give us an opportunity to perform songs we don’t normally get to play and allow us more opportunity to improvise and express ourselves musically,” Prather said. “We really enjoy playing the summer concerts at the Capitol and this program features a little something for everybody.”
Along with Prather, the Marine Jazz Combo members include trumpeter Gunnery Sgt. Daniel Orban, percussionist Staff Sgt. David Constantine, bassist Master Sgt. Glenn Dewey, and pianist Gunnery Sgt. Russell Wilson.
Inclement weather announcements will be made after 6 p.m. on the Marine Band Concert Information Line at (202) 433-4011. For more information, please visit www.marineband.marines.mil.
