March 20, 2014 -- This Sunday, March 23, “The President’s Own” will perform a chamber music series program featuring the
brass and percussionists of the Marine Band and Marine Chamber Orchestra. Coordinated by Gunnery Sgt.
Kenneth Wolin and Staff Sgt. Michael Warnick, the performance will take place at 2 p.m. in the John Philip
Sousa Band Hall at the Marine Barracks Annex in southeast Washington, D.C.

The program will offer transcribed, original, and new works for brass and percussion including Johann Sebastian
Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582, Anthony DiLorenzo’s A Little Russian Circus, and
Daniel Grabois’ Zen Monkey. The concert will highlight the skills of the Marine Band percussionists with Steve
Reich’s Mallet Quartet, written for two vibraphones and two five-octave marimbas; Master Sgt. Glenn Paulson’s
“Time on the Tracks,” which combines music with the world of transportation in relaying the sounds that
surround railroad tracks; David Hollinden’s Cold Pressed, a multi-percussion solo utilizing tambourine, bongo,
and cowbell; and Peter Tanner’s Concerto for Timpani and Brass Instruments, which shows off the capabilities
of the timpanist and accompanying brass ensemble.

“After packing up all our snow shovels, sleds, and ice-melt, I’m very excited about the program Staff Sgt.
Warnick and I have put together for the chamber music series,” said Gunnery Sgt. Wolin. “In the 16 years I’ve
proudly been part of ‘The President’s Own,’ I can say that this has to be one of the most eclectic variety of
pieces you’ll hear in one concert: a world premiére, authentic train sounds, concertina, standing drumset solo,
and elephant blast!”

The concert is free; no tickets are required. Free parking is available in the parking lot under the overpass on
7th Street across from the annex. The concert will also stream live on the Marine Band website beginning
at 2 p.m.
