MARINE BARRACKS WASHINGTON, D.C. -- What makes a Big Band swing? Join “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band for a kid-friendly concert on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. to find out! In a program with a wide variety of modern pop, timeless jazz classics and music from the action-packed animated film “The Incredibles,” children (and parents, too) can experience the bright and energetic sounds of Big Band Jazz.
Conducted by Assistant Director Captain Ryan J. Nowlin, this free, 50-minute performance is best suited for children 6-12, but will offer music that will please ears of all ages. The concert will also stream live at www.marineband.marines.mil.
“The kids will enjoy the way the music makes them feel,” Nowlin said. “It is electrifying, engaging and almost tangible!”
Some selections from the performance include Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” Joe Garland’s “In the Mood” and Harold Arlen’s “Over the Rainbow.”
After the performance, the experience will become tangible. Children are invited to a musical Petting Zoo to get a close-up look and try to play some of the instruments used during the concert. Musicians from the band will be available to answer questions and explain each instrument to the children.
“While young people will learn about the different sections in the big band, the role of the rhythm section, a variety of other musical styles, and even the concept of improvisation, they will walk away with a memory of the incredible sound, and how it makes them feel,” Nowlin said.
The concert will take place at Northern Virginia Community College’s Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall in Alexandria. A pre-concert performance also designed for children will begin at 1:15 p.m. in the lobby. Activity packets and crayons will be available for children to use during the concert. No tickets are required and free parking is available in the adjacent garage.
