“The Black Horse Troop” Celebrates its 100th Anniversary!

To close out 2024, the Marine Band is celebrating the 100th anniversary of John Philip Sousa’s 1924 march “The Black Horse Troop.” The March King completed the composition on Dec 11, 1924, and finished the band manuscript on Dec 30, 1924. Like many of Sousa’s compositions, “The Black Horse Troop” had a real inspiration, in this case Troop A, a cavalry unit of the Ohio National Guard.

On the Road with the Marine Band's 2024 National Concert Tour: From Sea to Shining Sea

If you left Washington and traveled 7,046 miles, you could reach the following places: Kenya, Siberia, the southern tip of South America, or even the North Pole. For members of “The President’s Own,” 7,046 miles was enough distance to travel from Washington… to Washington. The Marine Band’s 104th National Concert Tour left the National Capital Region on Oct. 1 and didn’t stop until the Band reached Seattle on Oct. 30, visiting 28 venues across the nation in the process. Marine Band tour concert venues are as diverse as the United States. The ensemble frequently performs in a professional concert hall in a major city one night and in a small-town high school gym the next. What doesn’t change, however, are the audiences. Regardless of where the Band goes, members are met with enthusiasm, patriotism and loud applause.

“The President’s Own” Celebrates John Philip Sousa’s 170th Birthday

Nov. 6, 2024 marks the 170th birthday of the Marine Band's esteemed 17th Director, John Philip Sousa, and the 58th year of the Marine Band's annual celebratory performance at Sousa's gravesite in honor of their former leader. Join the Marine Band for this special performance at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 6 at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C. (1801 E St. SE). This event is open to the public and tickets are not required.

Fall Chamber Series Oct. 27 - A Musical Mission

The Marine Band’s Fall Chamber Music Series will conclude with the concert, “A Musical Mission: Inside the Composer’s Mind and Soundscape,” at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 27. Coordinated by violinist Master Sgt. Sheng-Tsung Wang, the concert will take place at Capitol Hill’s historic Christ Church and Washington Parish, 620 G St SE in Washington, D.C. The concert is free, no tickets are required.

“Journeys” with Brahms and Ravel

The Marine Band continues its Fall 2024 Chamber Music Series at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 23, with a program titled “Journeys.” Coordinated by clarinetist Gunnery Sgt. Kristin Bowers, the concert will take place at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 301 A Street SE in Washington, D.C. The concert is free, no tickets are required.

Marine Band Continues Fall Chamber Music Series at Levine Music with "Electric Counterpoint"

The Marine Band continues its Fall 2024 Chamber Music Series on Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m. with a program titled “Electric Counterpoint.” Coordinated by Oboist Gunnery Sgt. Trevor Mowry, the concert will take place at Lang Recital Hall at Levine Music. The concert is free, no tickets are required. However, attendees are encouraged to RSVP for the performance on Levine Music’s website.

Marine Band opens Fall Chamber Series at Alexandria Lyceum

The Marine Band will open its Fall 2024 Chamber Music Series at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6 with a program of pieces inspired by historical Marine Band performances. Coordinated by clarinetist Gunnery Sgt. Lucia Disano, the concert will take place at The Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum in Alexandria. This concert is free and no tickets are required.

Meet the 2024 Marine Band Coast-to-Coast Tour Soloists!

Soprano vocalist and concert moderator Staff Sgt. Hannah Davis of Pittsburgh, Pa. joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in September 2023. She is the band’s second official female vocalist. In addition to acting as concert moderator, Davis will solo on every tour concert during the Marine Band’s 2024 Coast-to-Coast Tour. To prepare for the tour, Davis collaborated with Marine Band Director Lt. Col. Ryan Nowlin and Staff Arranger Gunnery Sgt. Scott Ninmer to select three pieces for this year’s tour.

Marine Band Presents Summer Season Finale Featuring 25th Director

This week, “The President’s Own” will conclude its annual Summer Concert Series with a pair of performances under the direction of 25th Director Col. John R. Bourgeois, USMC (Ret.). Marine Chamber Orchestra Presents: Death and the Maiden

This Saturday, the Marine Chamber Orchestra will take the stage to perform a pillar in chamber music repertoire: Franz Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D. 810, Death and the Maiden. This performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 17 at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center in Alexandria, Va. The concert is free and open to the public.
