Marine Band Anniversary Concert July 10 - Tuesday, July 10 at 7:30 p.m. - Guest conductor, composer, and pianist Bramwell Tovey joins the Marine Band for a special 220th Anniversary Gala Concert performing works by iconic American and British composers including Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Sir Edward Elgar, William Walton, and featuring George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, performed by Tovey himself. Tovey is the music director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and has made recent guest appearances with the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics and the Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras. Come celebrate more than two centuries of Marine Band history in this special performance! The concert is free, but tickets are recommended. For free tickets, visit www.strathmore.org. The concert will take place at The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Md.
Lt. Col. John R. Barclay Retirement Ceremony - On June 25, 2018, Executive Assistant to the Director Lt. Col. John R. Barclay retired from the Marine Band after 30 years of service. Lt. Col. Barclay joined the Marine Band in 1988 as a clarinetist and was appointed E-flat clarinetist in 1990. In 1996, he was named Operations Assistant and Assistant Drum Major, and in 1999 he became the Administrative Assistant to the Director. Later that year, he was named the band’s 37th Drum Major. Lt. Col. Barclay served in this capacity until 2001, when he was appointed to Executive Assistant to the Director. In this capacity, he served as the chief advisor to the Director for non-musical matters and was as the officer-in-charge of the band's Support Staff. In addition to his regular duties, Lt. Col. Barclay also served as a Ceremonial Marcher at Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., and has marched as Parade Commander for the 2008-10, 2012, and 2016 Parade Seasons. Since 2008, he has also served as an Escort Commander for Full Honors Funerals at Arlington National Cemetery and as Chief Instructor of Ceremonial Drill for all Marine Barracks officers and staff non-commissioned officers. Marine Chamber Orchestra Concert June 23 - Saturday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. - Making his conducting debut with the Marine Chamber Orchestra, Assistant Director Capt. Bryan P. Sherlock will kick off the orchestra’s Summer Series with works by well-known composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Igor Stravinsky, and Gustav Holst, as well as some lesser-known gems by Karl Jenkins and Henryk Górecki. The program will feature Stravinsky’s Concerto in D for String Orchestra; Holst’s St. Paul’s Suite, Opus 29, No. 2; and Bach’s popular Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F, BWV 1047, featuring flutist Gunnery Sgt. Ellen Dooley, oboist Staff Sgt. Trevor Mowry, trumpeter Staff Sgt. Anthony Bellino, and violinist Staff Sgt. Sheng-Tsung Wang. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will take place in Northern Virginia Community College's Schlesinger Concert Hall in Alexandria, Va. There will be no pre-concert ensemble performance prior to this concert.

Wolf Trap Summer Blast Off - Join “The President’s Own” on Memorial Day weekend and mark the beginning of summer with the annual concert at Wolf Trap. This year’s program is once again packed with great American music, from rousing marches and patriotic classics to a dazzling tribute to Louis Armstrong and the traditional performance of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s iconic 1812 Overture. The world of Broadway will be well represented with musical selections from Leonard Bernstein’s famous West Side Story in celebration of the centennial of his birth and a musical revue from the Rodgers and Hammerstein hit Oklahoma!, which first opened to great acclaim 75 years ago. This Memorial Day musical showcase is capped with one of the best fireworks displays of the year. Don’t miss a one-of-a-kind Washington event! Free, no tickets required.

Christopher Franke, this concert will feature a variety of string ensembles formed by members of “The President’s Own” Marine Chamber Orchestra, including a cello and piano duo; string quintet; and string quartet. The performance is free and open to the public and will take place in John Philip Sousa Band Hall at the Marine Barracks Annex. It will also stream live on the Marine Band website.
Marine Band Concert: Leonard Bernstein Centennial Celebration - Sunday, May 13 at 2 p.m. - Sunday, May 13 at 2 p.m. - The year 2018 marks the 100th year of the birth of the great American conductor, composer, and educator Leonard Bernstein. From his featured conducting debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1943 that catapulted him into the spotlight, to his emotional, final performance with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the Tanglewood Music Center just a few months before his death in 1990, Bernstein left a mark on the orchestral world that has not been surpassed by any other American conductor. This concert highlights several fascinating moments in Bernstein’s phenomenal career as both a composer and conductor and pays tribute to the creativity and originality of a true American musical icon.
