Location: Lang Recital Hall, Levine Music, 2801 Upton St NW, Washington, DC 20008

Date & Time: Thursday, October 17 at 7 p.m.

Program: View Here

Description: The Marine Band’s Fall Chamber Music Series continues with a concert titled “Electric Counterpoint.” This concert includes three pieces that have never been performed by our chamber ensembles: Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Trio Sonata No. 3 in B-Flat, ZWV 181, Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Grosse Fuge, Opus 133. The Zelenka sidesteps traditional baroque era tropes with its chromaticism and hums with energy. Reich’s Electric Counterpoint introduces interesting ideas about what counterpoint and chamber music is through an electronic medium, while Beethoven’s Fuge still holds its shock value 199 years after it was composed. This concert is free, no tickets are required.

Program: View Here

Description: Travel with Marine Band musicians through works crafted by giants of composition Maurice Ravel and Johannes Brahms in a free concert coordinated by clarinetist Gunnery Sgt. Kristin Bowers. The performance will feature Brahms’ Quintet in B minor for Clarinet and Strings, Opus 115, a robust piece in the chamber repertoire which he wrote as he journeyed out of retirement, and Ravel’s Trio in A minor for Piano, Violin, and Cello, which he furiously completed on the eve of his path into the military in World War I. The program will also include “A Fish Will Rise” by highly acclaimed composer Chris Rogerson, who wrote the piece as part of his “River Songs” series--the title serving as a nostalgic reference to one of his favorite books, Norman Maclean’s A River Runs Through It. This concert is free, no tickets are required.

OCTOBER 27 | Marine Chamber Ensembles at Christ Church and Washington Parish

Location: Christ Church + Washington Parish - Capitol Hill, 620 G St SE, Washington, DC 20003

Program: View Here

Description: The Marine Band’s Fall Chamber Music Series will conclude with the concert, “A Musical Mission: Inside the Composer’s Mind and Soundscape,” at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 27 at Capitol Hill’s historic Christ Church and Washington Parish. Coordinated by violinist Master Sgt. Sheng-Tsung Wang, this concert features music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and David Maslanka. The concert is free and no tickets are required.
