 MAY 31 | Marine Band at Wolf Trap: Summer Blast Off!

Location: Wolf Trap - Filene Center, 1551 Trap Road Vienna, VA 22182

Description: The Marine Band will once again kick off the summer concert season with the annual Summer Blast Off! concert at Wolf Trap with a mix of patriotic favorites, popular movie soundtracks, Sousa marches, and Broadway show tunes, as well as a guest appearance by iconic New Orleans jazz clarinetist Doreen Ketchens. As always, the program will conclude with a medley of the Armed Forces’ service songs honoring all those currently serving, veterans, and their families, followed by one of the best fireworks displays of the year. Don’t miss this annual family event and musical salute to our nation and its heroes!

Fireworks viewing areas will open following the performance at approximately 9:30 p.m. Fireworks to begin at approximately 9:45 p.m.

Description: The Marine Chamber Orchestra takes the stage for the performance of a pillar of the chamber music repertoire: Franz Schubert's String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D. 810, Death and the Maiden. The 40-minute work, which compliments a poem of the same name, modulates into D major only at the end of Death's Song, as the maiden succumbs. Also on the program, contemporary works "Starburst" by Jessie Montgomery and String Quartet No. 2, Company by Philip Glass.

Description: Since 1957, Marine Barracks Washington, the "Oldest Post of the Corps," has held Friday Evening Parades to publicly showcase the pride, professionalism and esprit de corps of Marines worldwide. At these ceremonial dress parades, guests witness the finest display of military precision and excellence, including musical performances by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band and "The Commandant's Own" United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, and impressively choreographed rifle drill executed by the United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. Following the ceremony, guests have the opportunity to meet Marines involved in the parade, as well as take photos with the Marine Barracks bulldog mascot, Chesty XVI.
