Description: “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band kicks off its 2025 concert season with the annual Sousa Season Opener! Enjoy pieces such as Overture to Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss Jr., The Pines of Rome by Ottorino Respighi, as well as patriotic marches from “The March King” himself, John Philip Sousa. Sousa was only 25 years old when he was called back by the Commandant of the Marine Corps to serve as the United States Marine Band’s 17th Director in 1880. During the next 12 years, Sousa simultaneously transitioned “The President’s Own” from a local military band into a world-renowned musical organization and transformed himself into a national celebrity and “The March King.” Sousa’s musical interests were often reflected in his programmatic style, as is represented in this performance.

Description: The works of Gioachino Rossini and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were state of the art during their lifetimes. Rossini left his mark on opera by composing nearly forty operas in half as many years, and Mozart influenced nearly every genre of music, redefining the symphony and setting the standard for all who followed. Enjoy the Marine Chamber Orchestra’s performance of Rossini’s Overture to Semiramide and one of Mozart’s most famous works, Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. 550. The concert will also feature Master Sgt. Patrick Morgan on Carl Maria von Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 2, and vocalist Staff Sgt. Hannah Davis on Mozart’s “Ach, ich fühl’s” from Die Zauberflöte, K. 620, and “Liebst du um Schonheit?,” Opus 12, No. 2 by Clara Schumann.

Description: High school students from around the nation were selected for the final round of the Marine Band Concerto Competition, presented as a recital open to the public in Truman Crawford Hall at Marine Barracks Washington D.C. The winner receives a $2,500 scholarship from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation and a solo opportunity with the Marine Band.

Description: The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the final campaign in the Pacific Theater and the end of the Second World War. Although eight decades have passed since that time, we continue to celebrate the accomplishments of the incredible men and women of America’s “Greatest Generation.” This concert takes place exactly 80 years from the date—Feb. 23, 1945—that Joe Rosenthal snapped his iconic photograph of six Marines raising the flag on Mount Suribachi during the battle of Iwo Jima. Join the Marine Band for a time capsule concert honoring those who came before us with selections that pay tribute to their selfless service and sacrifice. This special concert will also feature the winner of the 2024 Concerto Competition for High School Musicians (to be announced Feb. 15) in their debut performance live on stage with “The President’s Own.”

Description: Igor Stravinsky’s Apollon musagète made its debut in the city of Washington almost 100 years ago. Apollo, as it is often referred to, was commissioned to be played at a music festival at the Library of Congress in 1928. Stravinsky yielded his artistic freedom to compose a storyline around Greek mythology, featuring Apollo and his three muses: Calliope, Terpsichore and Polymnia. Split into two tableaux, or scenes, Apollo is starkly different from Stravinsky’s earlier works. Join the musician-led orchestra for this neoclassical ballet and other orchestral works!

Description: Since 1775, Marines have valiantly fought and died to protect our nation and advance its ideals. Our long and proud heritage of faithful service is fueled by an uncommon fighting spirit. From Belleau Wood to Afghanistan, the Marines have continued to answer our nation’s call. During this Gala concert we will celebrate the history and future of the nation’s greatest fighting force, with selections to include Robert Jager’s “Esprit de Corps,” George W. Warren’s “God of Our Fathers,” marches by John Philip Sousa, and the world première of Symphony No. 2 by former Marine Corps bandsman Onsby Rose. Join “The President’s Own” and special guests from "The Commandant’s Own” United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps, and a Marine Corps fleet band comprised of Marine musicians from across the globe at The Music Center at Strathmore for a concert celebrating the legacy of the “Few and the Proud.” The concert is free but tickets are required. Patrons may request up to two free tickets online at strathmore.org and in person at the Strathmore Ticket Office on a space available basis beginning February 24. Strathmore does not accept phone requests. Tickets are valid until 1:45 p.m., at which time all tickets become null and void and any remaining seats will be filled with patrons in the stand-by queue, which begins at 1:45 p.m., outside the Music Center.

Description: This year’s Young People’s Concert will feature Christopher Vu’s Magic Pearl, a dynamic shadow puppet play with live music! The classic Chinese folktale “The Bright Pearl” is brought to life with shadow puppetry, using a variety of techniques including overhead projectors, flat-press puppets, and handheld lights and screens. The show is equal parts live concert and mixed media theatrical performance, perfect for all families. Following the program, children are invited to a “musical petting zoo” to try the band’s instruments for themselves!

Description: Anchoring this performance are beloved works of two masters: Darius Milhaud’s remarkable La Création du monde, Opus 81a, and Joseph Haydn’s folk-like and highly original Symphony No. 88 in G, Hob. I:88. Featured alongside these masterpieces is the contemporary music of a young composer. Front and center in this performance is the world première of Burst, by Cole Reyes, the winner of the Marine Band’s Call for Scores, held in 2024 and supported by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. The composition was selected from nearly 80 submissions and was inspired by images released from NASA’s James Webb telescope and the many celestial phenomena that happen constantly in our universe.

Description: Travel through time and experience the rich history of the trumpet with the Wynton Marsalis Trumpet Concerto. Performed by guest soloist Michael Sachs, principal trumpet of the Cleveland Orchestra, this concerto showcases the comprehensive abilities of the trumpet as well as different genres throughout the ages. In addition to Marsalis’ Trumpet Concerto, the Marine Band will perform Georges Bizet’s renowned and wonderfully dramatic Carmen Symphony

Description: “The President’s Own” is excited to partner with Equity Arc to present the inaugural Equity Arc Wind Symphony. Equity Arc’s mission is to provide specialized support for young musicians from underrepresented communities and to help classical music become more equitable and inclusive. This concert marks the expansion of Equity Arc’s national programs for pre-college musicians of color. Musicians were selected through a competitive audition process to participate in a multiday music intensive with musicians from “The President’s Own,” concluding with this performance. This exciting program features band classics like Lincolnshire Posy as well as works by living composers like Rising Light by Kevin Charoensri. Also joining us for this occasion is celebrated conductor Dr. Rodney Dorsey.
