Administrative Chief Staff Sergeant Janeyia Cortes of Tacoma, Washington, was assigned to “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in April 2025. She officially changed her Military Occupational Specialty from 0111 (Administrative Specialist) to 5511 (Member, U.S. Marine Band) in March 2026.
After graduating from Insight School of Washington in 2017, she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. She completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, followed by Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, North Carolina, and Personnel Administration School at Camp Johnson, North Carolina.
In June 2018, she received the title of Administrative Specialist 0111 and reported to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California. In 2021, Staff Sgt. Cortes transferred to the 6th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company in Tacoma for duty. Shortly after, she became the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response coordinator for both active and reserve Marines at 6th ANGLICO.
After completing her 36-month Inspector-Instructor duty, Staff Sgt. Cortes was assigned to Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. In 2025, Staff Sgt. Cortes was assigned to “The President's Own” United States Marine Band.
As Administrative Chief, Staff Sgt. Cortes is responsible for processing all orders, enlistments, re-enlistments and retirements for members of the Marine Band.
Staff Sgt. Cortes’ awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
