Master Gunnery Sgt. Janet Bailey

Violinist Master Gunnery Sergeant Janet Bailey of McLean, Va., joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Chamber Orchestra in October 1996.

Master Gunnery Sgt. Bailey began her musical instruction at age 4. Upon graduating from McLean High School in 1990, she earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Boston University. Her notable instructors have been Yuri Mazurkevich of Boston University, Bayla Keyes and Peter Zazovsky of the Muir String Quartet, and Ricardo Cyncynates, assistant concertmaster of the National Symphony Orchestra.

Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” Master Gunnery Sgt. Bailey was a freelance musician in the Washington, D.C., area. She has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, National Chamber Orchestra, National Gallery Orchestra, all in Washington, D.C., and was concertmaster and soloist with the Loudon Symphony in Leesburg, Va.

With the orchestra, Master Gunnery Sgt. Bailey performs regularly at White House State Dinners, receptions, and other functions. She appears with the Marine Chamber Orchestra in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Some of her notable performances include Johannes Brahms’ Concerto in D major, Op. 77; Johann Sebastian Bach’s Concerto No. 2 in E major and Concerto for Two Violins in D minor; and Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata for Two Violins.
