Aug. 3, 2015 -- A Sousa march, cartoon music, a love song of regret, Tchaikovsky masterpiece, and a musical celebration—all that and more on this week’s Marine Band concerts on the National Mall! Conducted by 1st Lt. Ryan J. Nowlin, this week’s Summer Fare concerts will feature a variety of familiar and upbeat selections at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 5, on the west terrace of the U.S. Capitol and Thursday, Aug. 6, at the Sylvan Theater on the grounds of the Washington Monument. The evening performances are free and no tickets are required. Patrons are encouraged to bring folding chairs or blankets to sit on as there is no permanent seating available.
The program will begin with John Philip Sousa’s march “
Resumption” followed by Philip Sparke’s “Celebration,” a work which the composer says celebrates the optimism of the human spirit. Concertgoers will be delighted by Cartoon, composer Paul Hart’s nod to the music of the classic Warner Bros. “Looney Tunes,” the Walt Disney “Silly Symphonies,” and the MGM shorts directed by Tex Avery.
The concerts will include Gustav Holst’s beloved
Moorside March from
A Moorside Suite and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece Finale from Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Opus 36. In addition, Marine Band soloists will be highlighted on the program, to include horn soloist Master Gunnery Sgt. Amy Horn performing “Hunter’s Moon” by Gilbert Vinter and mezzo-soprano Gunnery Sgt. Sara Dell’Omo performing Lucy Simon’s “How Could I Ever Know?” from
The Secret Garden.
For the Summer Fare performances, limited street parking is available. For concerts at the Capitol, patrons may take the red line to Union Station or the blue, orange, or silver lines to the Capitol South station. For concerts at the Sylvan Theater, take the blue, orange, or silver lines to the Smithsonian station. The concerts are free but weather permitting and programming is subject to change.
