Gifts of John S. Burroughs, 1976-1988
No further accruals are expected.
Initial processing was conducted by SSgt Jane Cross in 2003-04 in preparation for the Library’s move to a new facility. Because no original or discernable order was evident, materials were usually sorted by format and arranged chronologically. Processing was continued by special assistants Andrea Vercoe in December 2017 and by Charles Willett in 2018 through the generosity of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. MGySgt Jane Cross encoded the finding aid in EAD format in August 2018.
According to U.S. Marine Corps historical property procedures, three-dimensional artifacts were separated and accessioned through the National Museum of Marine Corps (NMMC) at accession number 2015.80
Many printed items (books, magazines, and newspapers) were discarded as they were assessed as being generally commercially available or had exact duplicates within the collection. Photocopied duplicate materials and duplicate photographs were removed.
The Arthur Lehman papers (A1991-9) also contain records of the Association of Retired and Reserve Members of the U.S. Marine Band. Researchers may also want to consult the Arthur W. Lehman papers and Dale L. Harpham papers as they represent a similar era of Marine Band history.
Materials from the John S. Burroughs papers are governed by the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, U.S.C.) and other applicable international copyright laws. Permission to publish, quote, or reproduce must be secured from the copyright holder.
The John S. Burroughs papers are open to research. Researchers must contact the Marine Band Library and Archives to schedule a research appointment.
Researchers wishing to cite this collection should include the following information: [item, date, container number], John S. Burroughs papers, Marine Band Library and Archives, Washington, D.C.
Master Gunnery Sergeant John “Buddy” Burroughs was a member of the euphonium/baritone section with the U.S. Marine Band for thirty-one years, from 1935 to 1966. Born in 1916, he grew up in the Washington, D.C., region and spent the entirety of his life there. It had been his ambition to join the U.S. Marine Band since he was young. In childhood, he studied with members of the Army Band and with Peter Hazes from the Marine Band. As a high school student in Washington, D.C., Burroughs was a member of the Washington High School Cadets and the Elks Boys Band. Neighbor and high school classmate Donald Kimball entered the Marine Band euphonium/baritone section just a few years before Burroughs. When he joined the Marine Band as one of the youngest members at age nineteen, Burroughs sat next to future Marine Band Director William F. Santlemann.
While he ultimately specialized in euphonium, Burroughs played several instruments in the band, serving on viola in the orchestra and mandolin in the dance orchestra, as well as becoming assistant drum major for a few years. He became known for his baritone playing, however, and quickly became a featured soloist.
Burroughs took part in many tours with the band, spurring a lifelong interest in travel that resulted in collaborations with bands around the world. For example, he performed on a Naval Mission to Haiti for five years, assisting local bands in finding instruments and sheet music and teaching them marching techniques. After retiring from the Marine Band in 1966, he consulted with the Nationalist Chinese Marine Band, the Chinese Navy Band, and military bands in Australia and New Zealand. He also trained the Solomon Islands Police Band as a result of his involvement with the Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans. These fruitful collaborations are reflected in the large amount of correspondence in the collection. Burroughs traveled frequently with Lt. Col. Dale Harpham, a trombone player in the band who eventually became Director.
Burroughs was the consummate collector. Not only was he an accomplished postage stamp collector, selling several collections at auction, he accumulated a massive amount of Marine Band memorabilia, including photographs, documents, tour itineraries, newspapers, and letters; some of these items he later found to be one of a kind. His music collection, however, was his shining accomplishment, representing one of the largest private collections of band music, recordings, and memorabilia in the U.S. at the time it was donated. These items are often international in scope due to the relationships he developed around the world. As he collected, he often acquired surplus copies of printed music, and gave away boxes to anyone who asked, particularly to leaders of international bands who had limited access to such items.
After Burroughs retired from the Marine Band in 1966, he continued with his vigorous international correspondence, as well as teaching and performing. He performed and toured for many years as a charter member of the National Concert Band of America, joined by several other retired members of the Marine Band. He also performed with a German polka band. Burroughs participated in the administration of several musical organizations such as the National Catholic Bandmasters’ Association and as secretary of the Association of Retired and Reserve Members of the U.S. Marine Band. He was also an active member of the International Military Music Society and the Windjammers Unlimited. Burroughs was recognized for his service with a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, an American Theater Medal, and a Commendation from the Chinese Marine Corps.
Burroughs married Katherine Gibbons, whose father was a White House policeman, in 1938 and they had two children. After retirement, the couple continued to live in suburban Maryland. Burroughs passed away on October 27, 1988, at age 72 due to complications from cancer.
Materials in the John S. Burroughs papers document not only his 31-year career with the Marine Band, but also his activities as a high school band member in Washington, DC, his overseas travel during and after his service with the Marine Band, and his career as both performer and clinician following his retirement from the Marine Band. Burroughs was a devoted supporter of the organization before, during, and after his career. His high school scrapbooks and clippings files reflect his early interests as both performer and leader. Burroughs seemed to have a skill for knowing what would prove historically significant, the result being that his papers contain a wealth of programs, photos, and publicity materials, many not surviving elsewhere, that document the history of the Marine Band. Furthermore, Burroughs was particularly keen on ensuring that members were well-documented for future generations; he assembled lists of tour personnel going back decades, kept personnel rosters for the entire organization, and even made scrapbooks noting band member obituaries. Following his Marine Band career, Burroughs made several Marine Corps-sanctioned trips to assist foreign military bands with their musical training; those trips are documented here in both printed and photographic content.
Burroughs also traveled extensively outside of his official duties; a large collection of photographs and printed matter related to those overseas trips will be found here. An enthusiastic correspondent, much can be learned about the man and his activities simply by perusing the vast quantity of letters, postcards, and business cards preserved among his papers. Burroughs kept extensive records, many of which are preserved in this collection in the form of notebooks, diaries, report cards, and even World War II-era gas ration books.
An avid reader in his field, Burroughs subscribed to a wide variety of music journals and publications that make up a large portion of this collection. Burroughs and his contemporaries frequently catalogued both their music libraries and recordings collections, and many of those catalogs are preserved here, along with a sampling of various commercial music catalogues spanning several decades. Burroughs’ interest in band music extended far beyond that of the Marine Band, and several folders in this collection are devoted to materials that he assembled pertaining to military and concert bands around the world. Burroughs’ post-retirement involvement with organizations such as the National Concert Band of America, the Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans, and the National Catholic Bandmasters of America resulted in numerous projects and performances that are documented in this collection.
The collection is organized into eight series:
General correspondence to and from Burroughs, including a significant number of postcards.
Burroughs maintained a phenomenal collection of postcards, most of which were penned from him or addressed to him, but some that belonged to others that he kept for the international postage stamps, which he sometimes removed. About a quarter of the collection was organized by U.S. state; these were mostly postcards Burroughs sent to his family at various locations from early tours with the Marine Band.
List arranged chronologically.
Burroughs kept a large amount of personal and professional correspondence, often in the original envelopes. Of note are letters from some international pen pals from the 1930s. Due to his hobby of stamp collecting, Burroughs corresponded with fellow stamp collectors, and foreign correspondents who wrote to him inquiring about Marine Band recordings often enclosed stamps for him. He had many foreign correspondents up to his final years. Frequent correspondents, especially in the 1970s and 1980s, included the Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans organization officers, the Canadian War Museum, and the National Catholic Bandmasters Association.
List arranged chronologically.
This series is comprised of notebooks, address books, ledgers, diaries, business cards, World War II-era ration books, a high school scrapbook, certificates, membership cards, registration cards, passports, receipts, and genealogical documents. This series contains photographs, slides, negatives, certificates, film reels, and other visual-based material. There are both personal photos and official Marine Band photos. Several large-format images arrived rolled, and they remain in that state. A few additional photographs can be found in Series I or in Series III. B. See the Marine Band Biographical Files or the Working Images Files for copies of photos which are stored in related historical and personnel files.
Photographs were originally stored loosely or in albums, of which Burroughs kept many. One album consisting largely of photos from Marine Band tours and other run-out performances from 1935-1962, and one album containing photos from Burroughs’ international travels beginning in 1952, were disassembled and photos were placed in polypropylene sleeves, then arranged chronologically in a small archival storage box (Box 57); photocopies were made of original album pages to show original album layout. Additionally, three black binders containing 8 x 10 photos were disassembled and photos were re-arranged in folders (Boxes 41 and 42); because these photos were originally placed in binders without regard to chronology or event, no attempt was made to record or maintain original album layouts. An album of photos from Burroughs’ 1978 trip to Guadalcanal remains intact. Remaining photos were arranged by subject and further sorted chronologically. The slides, found in a slide box, are from a USMC-supported tour to Australia and New Zealand in 1972. They were removed and arranged in sleeves in approximate numerical order. Some of the negatives are from Bretton Woods, 1981, the annual New Hampshire summer performance venue for the National Concert Band of America. All items listed are photographs, unless otherwise noted.

Burroughs donated hundreds of recordings that are stored in two grey cabinets. The majority of the recordings are of band music. In the collection are mostly 33-1/3 RPM LPs, though there are also several 10-inch 78 RPM records and a few 7-inch 45 RPM records. The first section contains The Heritage of the March series, which is the only section that is indexed in the database. Subsequent sections are arranged by performing U.S. military ensemble, foreign country of performing ensemble, or into categories such as Vocal, Jazz, Spoken Word, Orchestral Music, and Musicals. Also in this series are two reel-to-reel tapes, recordings of the band’s Association of Retired and Reserve Members of the U.S. Marine Band meetings from October 1973 and March 1975. Further information on this organization can be found in Series II, III, and IV in this collection, or in the Arthur Lehman papers.
