The Library prepares music for performances, edits program notes, coordinates copyright clearances, and assists with maintaining the music library and historic archives of the Marine Band.
Master Sergeant Kira Wharton
Chief Librarian Master Sergeant Kira Wharton joined the “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in October 2003. She was appointed chief librarian in July 2019 and historian in 2013. Master Sgt. Wharton began her musical training on oboe at age 10. After graduating in 1989 from Grand Ledge High School, she attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, where she earned bachelor’s degrees in history and music in 1993. She earned a master of music history in 1995 and a doctor of musical arts in 1997 from the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” Master Sgt. Wharton was a member of the 389th Army Band, Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland and the 56th Army Band, Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Wash.
As a Marine Band Librarian, Master Sgt. Wharton prepares music for performances by the Marine Band and Marine Chamber Orchestra, and assists with maintaining the music library. As Historian, she researches and preserves the band’s history, maintains the archives and conducts oral history interviews with former members.
Staff Sergeant Charles Paul
Assistant Chief Librarian Staff Sergeant Charles Paul joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in February 2012. He was appointed to his current role in July 2019. Staff Sgt. Paul began his musical training on piano at age 5 and French horn at age 13. After graduating in 1997 from Parkland High School in Allentown, he attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in Ohio where he earned a bachelor’s degree in horn performance in 2002 and studied with Randy Gardner. He received his master’s degree in horn performance in 2004 from Temple University in Philadelphia, where he studied with Adam Unsworth of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” Staff Sgt. Paul was a freelance musician in Washington, D.C., and has performed with the Richmond Symphony and Fairfax Symphony Orchestra in Virginia, the National Philharmonic and Washington Concert Opera in Washington, D.C., the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, and the Allentown Symphony.
Staff Sergeant Anya Brodrick
Librarian Staff Sergeant Anya Brodrick of San Diego joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in June 2020. Staff Sgt. Brodrick began her musical training on the piano at age 6 and French horn at age 13. After graduating in 2005 from North Country Union High School in Newport, VT., she attended the University of Vermont where she earned bachelor’s degrees in French horn performance and English literature in 2009. In 2013, she earned a master’s degree in library and information sciences from Simmons College in Boston.
Prior to joining the band, Staff Sgt. Brodrick worked as a librarian for both the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Oberlin Conservatory.
Staff Sergeant Nishana Dobbeck
Librarian Staff Sergeant Nishana Dobbeck of Houston, joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in September 2013. Staff Sgt. Dobbeck began her musical training on the piano and violin at age 5 and double bass at age 14. After graduating in 2005 from Bellaire High School in Houston, she attended the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in Ohio where she earned a bachelor’s degree in double bass performance in 2009. In 2011, she earned a master’s degree in double bass performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Her teachers included principal bass Max Dimoff and Thomas Sperl of The Cleveland Orchestra.
Prior to joining the band, Staff Sgt. Dobbeck was the librarian for the Blossom Festival Band and Orchestra in Cleveland, library assistant with The Cleveland Orchestra, a chamber music librarian for the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, librarian and artistic planning manager for Apollo’s Fire: The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, and was a freelance double bassist in the Cleveland area.
Gunnery Sergeant Jennifer Jensen
Librarian Gunnery Sergeant Jennifer Jensen joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in November 2004. Gunnery Sgt. Jensen began her musical training at age 12. After graduating in 1997 from Saint James School in Montgomery, she attended Troy University in Troy, Ala., where in 2001 she earned a bachelor’s degree in music education, studying with James Zingara and Robert W. Smith. In 2003, she earned a master’s degree in music education from Auburn University in Alabama.
Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” Gunnery Sgt. Jensen was a graduate teaching assistant for Auburn University Bands.
Staff Sergeant Tilden Olsen
Librarian Staff Sergeant Tilden Olsen joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in December 2012. Staff Sgt. Olsen began his musical training on trumpet at age 5. After he completed his high school studies in 2005, he attended the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 2009 and master’s degree in 2011, both in trumpet performance. His instructor was George Vosburgh of the Pittsburgh Symphony.
Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” he was a substitute with the Pittsburgh Symphony and freelance musician in the Pittsburgh area.
