Funeral for Pfc. James Johnson, USMC
On May 31, 2016, the Marine Band, led by Drum Major Master Sgt. Duane King, participated in the funeral for World War II casualty Pfc. James Johnson, USMC. Pfc. Johnson was killed in action on Nov. 20, 1943 during the Battle of Tarawa in the central Pacific Ocean. In June 2015 History Flight, a private organization, excavated what was believed to be a wartime fighting position on the island of Betio. During this excavation History Flight recovered 35 sets of remains. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command used used Y-Short Tandem Repeat DNA analysis, which matched a nephew; laboratory analysis, including dental analysis, chest radiograph comparison, and anthropological comparison, which matched Johnson’s records; as well as circumstantial and material evidence to identify Pfc. Johnson. His remains were returned to the United States and buried at Arlington National Cemetery's Section 60 with military honors. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Master Sgt. Kristin duBois/released)
