On June 25, 2014, the Marine Band, led by Gunnery Sgt. Duane King, and Marines from Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., laid to rest Lt. Gen. Ernest C. Cheatham, Jr., USMC (Ret.) at Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, Va. In addition to his many assignments, he served as a platoon commander in Japan and Korea and battalion commanding officer for the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam, where he earned the Navy Cross and the Legion of Merit with Combat “V.” He also served as the Executive Officer, Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C.; Commanding Officer, 4th Marines; Director, Facilities and Services Division at Headquarters Marine Corps; Commanding General, Landing Force Training Command Atlantic, 4th Marine Amphibious Brigade; Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans, Policy, Joint Exercises for the Commander in Chief Atlantic Command/Commander in Chief Atlantic Fleet; Commanding General, I Marine Amphibious Force/Commanding General, 1st Marine Division; and Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Headquarters Marine Corps. In June 1954, he left the Marine Corps to play defensive tackle for both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Colts. He returned to active duty in March 1955. He is recognized in the Pro-Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, as the highest-ranking military member to have played professional football. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Master Sgt.
