This Month’s March of the month is John Philip Sousa’s “Powhatan’s Daughter.” The daughter referred to in the work’s title is none other than Pocahontas, the legendary Native American princess who saved the life of early American explorer John Smith. Sousa was commissioned to write the march for the 1907 Jamestown Exposition, the 300th anniversary celebration of the first English settlement in America. The Native American community embraced both the march and its composer, who would eventually be made an honorary chief of three tribes. The march was recorded Jan. 7, 2007, at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., under the direction of former Director Lt.Col. Michael J. Colburn.

September’s New Music Corner selection is Joel Puckett’s Short Stories, a unique concerto grosso inspired by the structure of the short story and featuring winds and string quartet: soloists Staff Sgts. Karen Johnson and Chaerim Smith on violin; Staff Sgt. Sarah Hart on viola; and Staff Sgt. Charlaine Prescott on cello.

The work was a highlight on the Marine Band’s March 16, 2014, performance at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center in Alexandria, Va. According to the composer, the movements merely suggest a story or plot, but he hopes listeners will hear beautiful sounds that they hadn’t before considered and then create their own tale.
