The U.S. Marine All Star Jazz Band, comprised of roughly 20 musicians hand-picked from the Marine Corps, featured Master Sgt. Scott Gearhart from “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band as their lead trumpet. Their two-week tour of the Northeast concludes on Thursday with a performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York with special guest saxophonist Bob Mintzer, of the Grammy award winning jazz ensemble the Yellowjackets. The program consists of a number of originals and arrangements by trombone player Staff Sgt. Ken Ebo, instructor at the Naval School of Music located on Little Creek Joint Expeditionary Base in Virginia, including a big band version of The Marines’ Hymn, Duke Ellington’s “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” and Hank Levy’s arrangement of “My Favorite Things” from “The Sound of Music.” Staff Sgt. Ebo also takes a turn on vocals with Johnny Mercer’s “Summer Wind” and Frederic Loewe’s “Almost Like Being in Love.” The concerts are free and tickets are not required.
