January Audio Includes Sousa March and Marine Chamber Orchestra

15 Jan 2014 | SSgt Brian Rust United States Marine Band

January’s Director’s Choice audio download features the Marine Chamber Orchestra’s recent performance of Edvard Grieg’s Suite for Strings, Opus 40, “From Holberg’s Time.” The five-movement suite is based on the Baroque dance forms that were popular during the lifetime of one of Scandinavia’s greatest literary figures, Ludvig Holberg. Grieg utilizes the highly individual and nationalistic style that has become so associated with his music, and the suite is by turns invigorating and lyrical. Through his use of Norwegian folk-like melodies and styles, the composer pays homage not only to Holberg, but also to the culture that produced him.

Assistant Director Maj. Jason K. Fettig conducted the chamber orchestra in the performance of the piece on Aug. 17, 2013, at Northern Virginia Community College’s Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center in Alexandria, Va.

The March of the Month audio download is John Philip Sousa’s Mother Hubbard March. A companion piece to Sousa’s Mother Goose March, this medley march was also based on nursery rhymes. Included are “Three Blind Mice,” “Thus the Farmer Sows His Seed,” “Old Mother Hubbard,” “Hey Diddle Diddle,” “Little Redbird in the Tree,” “London Bridge is Falling Down,” and “The Minstrel Boy.”

Former Director Col. Timothy W. Foley conducted this Marine Band performance in January 2004 at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts Concert Hall in Fairfax, Va.
