Master Sergeant Preston Mitchell
Operations Specialist Master Sergeant Preston Mitchell joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in May 1997 as a librarian and was appointed to the Operations staff in August 2003. Master Sgt. Mitchell began studying the trumpet at age 16. After graduating from Lubbock High School in 1987, he attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, receiving both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education.
Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” Master Sgt. Mitchell was the assistant band director for the Abernathy Independent School District and Lubbock High School in Texas, and a graduate teaching assistant with the Texas Tech University Bands in Fredericksburg.
Gunnery Sergeant Julia Piorkowski
Operations Assistant Gunnery Sergeant Julia Piorkowski joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in October 2004 as a librarian and joined the Operations staff in March 2012. Gunnery Sgt. Piorkowski began her musical training on the French horn at age 9. After graduating in 1995 from Rosary High School in Aurora, she attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she earned a bachelor’s degree in French horn performance and studied with Kazimierz Machala. She received her master’s degree in 2003 and completed her doctoral studies in 2004 at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Randy Gardner.
Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” Gunnery Sgt. Piorkowski was a freelance musician and private teacher in the Cincinnati area.
