Master Sergeant Aaron Clay
Double bassist Master Sergeant Aaron Clay joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in July 1994 and was appointed principal in 2013. MSgt Clay began his musical instruction at age 15. After graduating in 1985 from Fairmont Senior High School, he earned a bachelor’s degree in music from West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon in 1990, where he studied with Richard Manspeaker.
Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” MSgt Clay was a double bassist with the U.S. Navy Band.
He was a featured soloist with the Marine Band during the band’s 2005 national concert tour.
Master Sergeant Glenn Dewey
Double bassist Master Sergeant Glenn Dewey, joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band and Marine Chamber Orchestra in May 1994. He served as principal from 1999-2013. MSgt Dewey began his musical training at age 9, initially studying piano and then double bass while in high school. After graduating from Duluth Central High School in 1981, he studied music at the University of Minnesota at Duluth for two years. In 1983, he transferred to the University of Illinois (UI) at Urbana-Champaign where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music (bass performance) in 1987. He continued his studies at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., where in 1991 he earned a master’s degree in music (bass performance). His double bass instructors included Michael Cameron of UI and Jeff Bradetich of Northwestern University.
Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” MSgt Dewey was a double bass and electric bass instructor at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill. In 1994, he commissioned and performed the world première of “The Eclectic Heartland” by David Burdick with the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra. MSgt Dewey also toured Europe with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra of Illinois.
He was a featured soloist with the Marine Band during the band’s 2007 national concert tour.
Gunnery Sergeant Eric Sabo
Double bassist Gunnery Sergeant Eric Sabo joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Chamber Orchestra in April 2000. GySgt Sabo began his musical instruction at age 12. After graduating from Trevor G. Browne High School in Phoenix in 1992, he attended Arizona State University in Tempe, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music and studied with Dan Swaim. He also pursued master’s-level studies at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he studied with Chris Brown of St. Paul, Minn.
Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” GySgt Sabo performed with the Arizona Opera Company in Phoenix, Evansville Philharmonic in Evansville, Ind., Owensboro Symphony in Owensboro, Ken., and was an affiliate bass professor at Murray State University in Kentucky.
