Gunnery Sergeant Samuel Barlow

Trombonist Gunnery Sergeant Samuel Barlow joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in June 2004. He was named principal trombone in January 2013. GySgt Barlow began his musical training at age 12. Upon graduating in 1995 from Northside High School in Jackson, he attended Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., where in 2000 he earned a bachelor’s degree in music education. In 2003, he earned a master’s degree in music performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory in Ohio. His trombone instructors included Susan K. Smith from Austin Peay State University and Cincinnati Symphony principal trombone Cristian Ganicenko.

Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” GySgt Barlow performed with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra in Ohio.

Master Gunnery Sergeant Charles Casey

Trombonist Master Gunnery Sergeant Charles Casey joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in November 1993. He was appointed assistant principal in 1998. MGySgt Casey began his musical training at age 10. Upon graduating from Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville, Md., in 1978 he attended the University of Texas in El Paso and the Peabody Conservatory of The John Hopkins University in Baltimore where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music. He studied trombone with James Olin and Eric Carlson of Peabody.

In 2002 and 2005 he was a featured tour soloist.

Master Sergeant Chris Clark

Trombonist Master Sergeant Chris Clark joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in August 1999. He was appointed section leader in 2008. MSgt Clark began his musical instruction at age 11 under the tutelage of his father, Jimmy Clark. He graduated in 1991 from Commerce High School, where he studied with the late Dr. Neill H. Humfeld. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in 1995 where he studied with Glenn Dodson, a former member of the Marine Band and principal trombone of the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 1997, he earned a master’s degree in music from The Juilliard School in New York where he studied with Joseph Alessi, principal trombonist of the New York Philharmonic. MSgt Clark earned his doctorate in musical arts from the Catholic University of America in May 2009, where he studied with David Fedderly.

Prior to joining the band, MSgt Clark was a freelance trombonist in New York.

Gunnery Sergeant Darren Bange

Trombonist Gunnery Sergeant Darren Bange joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in May 2001. GySgt Bange began his musical career at the age of 5. Upon graduating in 1995 from Owings Mills High School in Owings Mills, Md., he attended the Peabody Conservatory of the John Hopkins University in Baltimore, where he received a bachelor’s degree in 1999 and a master’s degree in 2001. His trombone instructors were David Fetter and James Olin.

Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” GySgt Bange played with the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra and the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, both in Maryland.



Gunnery Sergeant Timothy Dugan


Trombonist Gunnery Sergeant Timothy Dugan joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in August 2003. GySgt Dugan began his musical training at age 9. Upon graduating in 1996 from Ocean City High School, he attended The College of New Jersey in Ewing, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music education in 2000. In 2003, he earned a master’s degree in music performance from Indiana University in Bloomington. His trombone instructors included Donald Harwood from The College of New Jersey, and M. Dee Stewart and Peter Ellefson from Indiana University.

Staff Sergeant Preston Hardage

Trombonist Staff Sergeant Preston Hardage joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in October 2004. SSgt Hardage began his musical career at age 12. After graduating from Parkway Central High School in Chesterfield in 1999, he earned a bachelor’s degree in music and performer’s certificate in 2004 from Indiana University in Bloomington. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. His instructors included Jim Martin of St. Louis, Roger Oyster of the Kansas City Symphony in Missouri, and Carl Lenthe of Indiana University, formerly with the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Germany.   

Prior to joining “The President’s Own,” SSgt Hardage performed with the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckinridge, Colo.

Staff Sergeant Christopher Reaves

Trombonist Staff Sergeant Christopher Reaves joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in February 2013. SSgt Reaves began his musical instruction on piano at age nine and trombone at age 11. He graduated in 2003 from Widefield High School in Colorado Springs where he studied with Sandra Bell. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music from The Juilliard School in New York in 2007 where he studied with Joe Alessi, principal trombone with the New York Philharmonic. He also studied with Jan Kagarice in 2010 while pursuing an artist certificate at the University of North Texas in Denton.

Prior to joining the band, SSgt Reaves performed with the Harlem Symphony Orchestra and the Manhattan Symphonie, both in New York, and freelanced in Colorado Springs, New York, and in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
